Memorizing classical music: What are the best ways to do it?

I’ve heard people asked how musicians, especially pianists, manage to remember so much music. (I myself wonder how some conductors memorize whole symphony and opera scores and perform without them.)

Then I stumbled on this forum.

I found it illuminating and helpful, though I don’t agree with all the advice or think the same tips work for everyone.
