The Well-Tempered Ear

Classical music news: The Well-Tempered Ear blog breaks 50,000 hits. Make it better. Pass it around and make it more popular.

When I started writing “The Well-Tempered Ear” blog in late August of 2009, little did I think I would get 50,000 hits in the first year. The whole first month’s hits only totaled about 300.

But lo and behold, this past Monday, I saw the magic number roll over from 49,999 right past 50,000.

And it came — much to my delight and surprise — a good two months ahead of the first anniversary.

So to all the readers of “The Well-Tempered Ear,” I offer my sincere and heart-felt thanks for success.

I hope you will keep reading the blog.

And I hope you will help it improve. help make it better, more useful, more enjoyable and, of course, more popular.

There are some simple steps you can take.

First, let me know what stories you like most: the Q&As and advance features; the concert, book  and CD reviews: the wrap-up and links to national and worldwide stories in other media outlets that you would otherwise miss.

Second, please pass along a link to this blog to anyone you know who would enjoy reading about classical music. Although I am based in Madison, Wisconsin — a city rich in classical music — the blog has a following around the world. And if everyone just passes a link along to another half-dozen or dozen other people, it will grow and get many more hits and many more subscriptions.

Third, please write and post more comments. I want to encourage interactivity. I am even willing to allow you to be a guest blogger if your comment is long enough and well enough conceived and written (up to 500 words or so would be good).

I keep receiving compliments about how the Ear is especially useful and enjoyable at a time when so much of the regular media is choosing to ignore classical music and art in general while sports, politics and popular culture rule and get increased attention.

So let me know what you think of the blog and how to make it better.

I’d also appreciate any ideas about how to expand the blog’s reach.

More than ever, The Ear wants to hear.

And once again, many, many thanks.

How long do you think it will be before The Ear reaches 75,000 and 100,000?

In the meantime, as a form of my giving thanks here is a small reward (Beethoven) in the form of a favorite performance of a favorite piece of music (the “Sacred Song of Thanksgiving” done, unfortunately, in two takes) that I thought would be appropriate for the occasion:

Sit back and listen. And enjoy.
