The Well-Tempered Ear

  1. Glad to see you back!
The HS orchestra at Middleton performed this 5 years ago and it was an incredible experience. We discovered that the piece was not originally composed with Hiroshima in mind and that attachment came after its first performance. We spent time learning about the rock-and-a-hard-place decision Truman had to make and decoded the unusual notation used by Penderecki. The performance started with the Beethoven Egmont Overture, then some Autumn Leaves by Rebikov, the Threnody, the Adagietto from Mahler’s 5th, and finally the Berceuse and Finale from Firebird. We performed with no applause to create an emotional arc, and that allow the audience to really appreciate the power of the Threnody. We will never forget that concert!
